ICI Cycle Preparation Checklist: 30 Days Before Insemination

ici cycle preparation checklist

Successful home ICI starts long before the syringe is ever picked up — it begins with a well-organized preparation cycle. This checklist covers everything from supplement timing and supply ordering to emotional readiness and partner communication. Working through these steps in the 30 days before your insemination dramatically increases your chances of a smooth, low-stress experience. Print this checklist and check off each item as you go.

Four Weeks Out: Health and Medical Preparation

Start or continue taking a prenatal vitamin containing at least 400mcg of folic acid (ideally 600–800mcg for those trying to conceive). Folic acid is most critical in the first weeks of pregnancy, often before a positive test, so begin at least one full cycle before your insemination attempt. Also add a CoQ10 supplement (200–600mg daily) if you are over 35, as research supports its role in egg quality improvement.

Schedule a preconception appointment with your OB or midwife to review your medical history, confirm your vaccination status is current, and discuss any medications that may affect fertility or early pregnancy. Ask for a baseline hormone panel including FSH, LH, estradiol, AMH, and a thyroid panel — these values give you a clearer picture of your ovarian reserve and cycle health before you invest in multiple insemination cycles.

Three Weeks Out: Supplies and Sperm Ordering

Order all insemination supplies at least three weeks before your expected insemination date to allow time for shipping and any exchange if a product arrives damaged. Your core supply list should include: an insemination kit or syringe, collection cups, Pre-Seed lubricant, a basal body thermometer, OPK strips (at least 20), a speculum if desired, and sterile gloves. Keep everything in a dedicated, clean storage bin.

If using a sperm bank, confirm your order and shipping date based on your expected ovulation window. Most cryobanks require 5–10 business days for processing and can ship with a 24–72 hour delivery window. Confirm the cryobank ships to your state and review their thawing and handling instructions in advance — some require specific storage equipment upon arrival if insemination is delayed.

Two Weeks Out: Cycle Tracking Setup

Download a dedicated fertility tracking app such as Kindara, Femm, or Natural Cycles, and begin logging your temperature every morning before getting out of bed. Consistency is critical: take your temperature at the same time every day (within 30 minutes) using a basal body thermometer accurate to two decimal places. A standard digital thermometer is not precise enough for BBT charting. Your temperature log over two weeks will reveal your typical pattern before ovulation.

Begin cervical mucus (CM) observation if you are not already doing so. Check each morning and log the texture and appearance: dry, sticky, creamy, or the stretchy egg-white mucus (EWCM) that signals peak fertility. EWCM appears 1–3 days before ovulation and is the best natural indicator of your fertile window alongside OPK results. The combination of EWCM and a positive OPK is your strongest cue to inseminate.

One Week Out: Logistics and Final Prep

Confirm sperm arrival or fresh sample logistics, verify that all supplies are on hand and not expired, and do a full dry run of your insemination setup in the space you plan to use. Lie in the position you intend to use, practice drawing water into the syringe to get comfortable with the mechanism, and make sure your hip-elevation pillow is positioned correctly. Reducing any friction on the actual day keeps the experience calm and focused.

Prepare a post-insemination rest kit: a comfortable pillow, a light blanket, a book or show queued up, a glass of water, and your phone on Do Not Disturb. Decide whether you want a partner present or prefer to do this alone, and communicate that preference clearly. Having your environment set before ovulation day means you will not be scrambling at the moment your OPK turns positive.
